Ready, steady...

Although I have given up buying fabric for Lent, I concluded this didn't extend to threads for partly finished projects.

As you see I have my colour choice ready and after Armorel ( my mother) returning the rest of my stencil collection I am almost ready to start quilting.

Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo, a National Trust property near Exeter is having a new roof that doesn't leak. Cost is estimated as £11 million. This is on the viewing platform inside the scaffolding tent which has been erected over the castle itself.

Celtic Mystery Completed

I have now completed Bonnie's 2013 Mystery Quilt 'Celtic Solstice Mystery'. As you can see I have hand quilted it which has taken me about 5 weeks as I started it just before the last link in.

I know that some people find the hand quilting really hard, but I feel it is really worth doing because I believe it allows one to enhance the piecing which the machine quilting patterns can sometimes detract from. It took me a while to decide how to quilt this pattern and in the end when for a combination of cross hatching and in the ditch quilting. The effect on the reverse consequently reflects the overall piecing.

For the final border quilting I was able to choose more freely and so used a simple border design that picked up elements of the overall effect of the piecing.  I can't remember the name of this pattern.

As usual I got myself in a muddle joining the binding together - 20 minutes to get it right this time, I have done enough of these, so why do I get so confused? Perfect in the end, but oh the struggle to get it right confounds me every time! Yes, I have a ruler thing to help, but it didn't work well for me last time and so I have gone back to my muddled approach!

t had hoped to get a better picture of the quilt by photographing outdoors, but everything is still grey and damp and it just didn't work out. There is a glimmer of hope that spring is not far away, but at the moment I am still enjoying sitting by the warm fire. Now the Celtic Mystery is complete I have another quilt basted and ready for a bit creative stitching.....
